Wanzhou's tourism list is short and weighted. It names the Wanzhou great waterfall, the Tanzhang gorge, the Tiefengshan and Wang'erbao forest parks, the Yanjing dragon cave and the old towns, and it sets Taibai rock with Tiansheng city and Duli mountain as places carrying deep cultural layers. The phrase is a claim about depth rather than height, and it is enough to place the rock among the names a district uses when it wants to say that a place has been written about. One of the subdistricts is called Taibai, so the rock is also an address.

The town that moved
The rock's town has been moved more than once. Wanzhou was opened to foreign trade in 1902, had a customs house by 1917, was made a city in 1928, and after the government moved to Chongqing in 1937 became a strategic depot and Sichuan's third city, with 175,000 urban people. Then the reservoir came: 47 percent of the old urban area was submerged and had to be relocated, and 263,000 people were resettled, the heaviest task in Chongqing. The Yangtze still runs 82.6 kilometres through the district, past a rock that kept its name through all of it.
