Nanquan: the wartime retreat south of the river

Nanquan lies in Banan, south of the Yangtze, in the hills the district counts as most of its surface. Its subdistrict covers 84.5 square kilometres, and the Nanquan hot springs are one of the district's scenic areas, with geothermal water drawn here as at Dongquan and Qiaokouba. During the war, when the Yuzhong peninsula was bombed flat, the National Government's actual seat was in Banan, and the traces of that period are still listed: Chiang Kai-shek's former residence, Kong Xiangxi's former residence and the Nanquan wartime site group, which is the district's national key cultural relic. On 1 November 1949 the People's Liberation Army's attack on Chongqing opened with the battle of Nanquan.
