Twelve storeys pinned to a rock in the Yangtze
Shibaozhai is a timber tower built against a river rock. The reservoir made the rock an island, so the county built a wall to keep the water off it.
Zhong County lies 180 kilometres by road from downtown Chongqing, on the Yangtze in the middle of the reservoir. The name means loyalty, and the Tang emperor Li Shimin gave it for General Ba Manzi, who let himself be killed to keep his city; in 634 the prefecture was renamed Zhongzhou for him and for Yan Yan and Gan Ning. The county covers 2,182.83 square kilometres, has 975,900 registered residents and 721,000 resident ones, and the Yangtze runs 88 kilometres through it. Its lowest ground is 117.5 metres in the river valley at Shibao town, where Shibaozhai stands.
