The free ferry and the arsenal
How a ferry crossing on the south-west bank became a steel district, and how the plant shaped the streets around it.
Dadukou is the district on the south-west bank of the Yangtze that took its name from a free ferry in the late Qing and was then built around steel. In 1938 the Hanyang steelworks, the Hanyeping ironworks and the Shanghai steelworks were moved here and formed the 29th arsenal; on 2 April 1965 the Jiugongmiao, Xinshancun and Yuejincun subdistricts were cut out of Jiulongpo to make the Dadukou industrial district, seated at Xinshancun. Chongqing Iron and Steel, Chonggang, stood at its centre, with schools, hospitals and shops organised around the plant. The workshop of the steelworks relocation committee is now a national key cultural relic.
