The free ferry and the arsenal
How a ferry crossing on the south-west bank became a steel district, and how the plant shaped the streets around it.
Dadukou is one of the twelve central urban clusters of Chongqing, on the south-west bank of the Yangtze, facing Nan'an and Banan across the water and bordering Jiulongpo, the high-tech zone and Shapingba. On 2 April 1965 the Jiugongmiao, Xinshancun and Yuejincun subdistricts were cut out of Jiulongpo to form the Dadukou industrial district, and in 1995 it grew from 7.46 to 103 square kilometres by taking Xiqiazi, Baqiao and Jiansheng from Jiulongpo and Tiaodeng from Banan. It is an important base for metallurgy and building materials. Line 2 has run from Xinshancun to Jiaochangkou since 28 June 2006.
