The port, the weir and the tomb: Songji on the Yangtze
Songji kept the buildings of a county seat long after the county had moved away, and it still works as a wharf.
Yongchuan District lies in the south-eastern Sichuan Basin, 63 kilometres from Yuzhong District and with 1,200 years of recorded history. It was a county from 776, when land was cut from Luzhou and Bishan to create it, and became a district on 22 October 2006. The name comes from three rivers converging inside the town in the shape of the seal-script character yong. The Yangtze runs 21.5 kilometres along its southern edge, and the Yongchuan port area of Chongqing Port works two wharves there, Songji and Zhutuo. North of the city the Jishan forest farm holds the Chashan Zhuhai national forest park, and the district's forest coverage stands at 51 per cent.
