Nan'an is the south bank of the Yangtze, which curves around its north and west sides for about 45 kilometres. The district began in 1929 as a south-bank municipal office at Xuantanmiao with four wards, Nanchengping, Haitangxi, Longmenhao and Danzishi, and took its name in October 1955; it now has eight subdistricts and seven towns. Before the first bridge opened in the early 1980s, ferries were the only link to the downtown peninsula. In the war years it housed He Yingqin, Song Meiling, Lin Sen and Dai Li, the American George Marshall, and writers Mao Dun, Ba Jin, Guo Moruo, Hu Shi and Tao Xingzhi.
