Baisha is a township-level unit of Jiangjin District on the south bank of the Yangtze. In 1951 the seat of the Jiangjin special district moved from Jijiang town to Baisha, and in 1956 it moved back, so the town held the administration for five years. During the war with Japan, 36 universities and schools moved into Jiangjin, most of them to Baisha, with the National Compilation and Translation Bureau, the Central Library and the Kuomintang's central party history office. The town is also the birthplace of Chongqing's sorghum liquor, a trade a great fire destroyed in the 1930s.
