Zhuoshui: the covered bridge and the town behind it

Qianjiang is the district at the south-eastern corner of Chongqing, set in the Wuling mountains where the municipality meets Hubei. The old county was made a Tujia and Miao autonomous county in 1983 and became a district in June 2000, the only district in Chongqing converted from an autonomous county, and it still receives the policies of an autonomous area. It lies 425 kilometres by road from the urban centre and holds 487,281 people, of whom 55.11 per cent are Tujia and 15.19 per cent Miao. Its nickname, the Throat of Sichuan and Hubei, is a road fact rather than a boast, and Xiaonanhai, the best-preserved ancient earthquake site in China, lies inside it.
