Shizhuan Mountain

Shizhuan lies in Fo hui village of Sanyu town, some twenty kilometres south-west of Dazu town, on a low hill whose ridges curl like seal script. Ten numbered niches were cut into a face about 130 metres long between 1082 and 1096 under the local landowner Yan Xun. What sets the hill apart is not its size but its company: Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian figures share the same caves, which makes it the clearest place in the district to see the three traditions carved side by side rather than argued about in a text.
