Baodingshan: the cliff read from outside
The Baoding valley near Dazu, where a monk's seventy-year campaign filled half a kilometre of open rock with figures meant to be walked past.
Dazu lies in the folded hill country west of the Chongqing urban area, eighty kilometres from the main city and 256 kilometres from Chengdu. It became a district of the municipality in October 2011, when Dazu County and the old Shuangqiao District were merged into a single administration. The name is older than that: a Song geographical gazetteer says the county was called after the river that ran inside its own border. What brings people here is the stone. Five concentrations of cliff carving stand on the hillsides of the district, and the two that carry the most weight are Baoding hill to the north-east and Beishan to the north.
