Twelve storeys pinned to a rock in the Yangtze
Shibaozhai is a timber tower built against a river rock. The reservoir made the rock an island, so the county built a wall to keep the water off it.
Shibaozhai stands on the north bank of the Yangtze at Shibao town in Zhong County. The rock rises sheer by the river, more than ten zhang high, in red-cliff landform; legend makes it a five-coloured stone left from Nüwa's repair of the sky, and its jade-seal shape gives the name Yuyin Mountain. In the last years of the Ming, Tan Hong held the hill as a stronghold, which gave the place its name. The tower against it is twelve storeys and entirely of timber, and after the reservoir filled a great dike was built around the whole stronghold.
