A rock the district names among its deepest cultural layers, in a port that was opened to trade and then had 47 percent of its old town submerged.
Wanzhou lies in the north-east of Chongqing at the heart of the Three Gorges reservoir area, on the Yangtze, which runs 82.6 kilometres through the district. The name means where ten thousand rivers gather. Its urban area covers 110 square kilometres, and the Three Gorges project moved and resettled 263,000 people here, the heaviest resettlement task in Chongqing; 47 percent of the old urban area was submerged. It was opened to foreign trade in 1902 and had a customs house by 1917, and after the government moved to Chongqing in 1937 it became a strategic depot and Sichuan's third city. It is a historic-culture city of Chongqing.
