Longmenhao

Longmenhao is a stretch of the Yangtze on the south bank, off Shangxinjie. In Chongqing a long, narrow piece of water cut off from the main channel by a rock bar is called a hao, and its current runs more gently than the shipping channel. The gap in the bar is the Dragon Gate, and the old wharf divides the water into an upper hao and a lower hao; the subdistrict keeps communities named for both. In 1929 the new city's south-bank office took in Longmenhao as one of its four wards, and in 1952 the district government moved its seat here from Danzishi.
