Putuo Mountain: a temple, a stair, and a hill named for a monk
The 598-metre hill west of Changshou town, its Northern Song Chan temple rebuilt in 2014, and the 1,789 steps between the gate and the ancestral hall.
Changshou District stands on the Yangtze eighty kilometres downstream of the Yuzhong district of downtown Chongqing, in low hills at the southern end of the basin's eastern parallel ridge-and-valley belt. A county has been recorded here for 2,300 years: a Zhi county in 316 BC, renamed Jiangzhou in 226 AD, Lewen in 519, and Changshou county in 1362. It became a Chongqing district in 2002. The economy rests on chemicals, steel and machinery, and the district is described as the country's largest natural gas chemical base; beside the river lies Lake Changshou, a man-made water of sixty square kilometres.
