Chaotianmen

Chaotianmen is the north-east tip of Yuzhong, where the Jialing enters the Yangtze. Water stands on three sides, the ground rises in the middle, and long steep stone stairs still connect the upper city with the wharves. A gate was built here in the early Ming, facing the imperial capital at Nanjing, and gave the place its name. The customs house was set up here when the port opened in 1891; the gate was pulled down in 1927 to make the wharf, and only its base remains. From the square the green Jialing can be seen entering the brown Yangtze.
