The fortress at the gorge mouth, and the water that made it an island
Baidicheng has been a temple, a Southern Song fortress and a cruise stop. The reservoir drowned the town below and left the hill standing in the river.
Baidicheng stands on the north shore of the Yangtze eight kilometres east of the Fengjie county seat, backed by mountain, surrounded by water on three sides and facing the mouth of the Qutang Gorge. Gongsun Shu built a city here after a well in it gave off white vapour like a white dragon, and took the title White Emperor. The site is a temple complex over a Southern Song fortress whose walls mostly survive from 1242 to 1278. In 2003 the rising reservoir drowned Baidi Mountain and the old town below at the 135-metre level, leaving the temple on an island joined to the bank by a bridge.
