The hill of temples that named a county
Fengdu's underworld is a real hill with real halls, built out of two hermits, a misread character and a river that keeps stopping.
The Ghost City occupies Ming Mountain on the north bank at Fengdu, about 170 kilometres downstream of Chongqing. It is a complex of shrines, temples and halls laid out to resemble Youdu, the capital of the underworld, with paintings and sculptures of the punishments of sinners, and it appears in Journey to the West, Investiture of the Gods and Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Its story begins with two Eastern Han hermits, Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping, whose surnames were joined as Yinwang, King of the Underworld. The county seat that grew beside it has since moved away.
