Youyang's Peach Blossom Spring: a village named after a text
The southern Peach Blossom Spring, the fable it borrows, and the honest problem of a real place named after a fiction.
Youyang is the largest county-level division of Chongqing, 5,173 square kilometres of mountain between the Wu River on the west and the Youshui on the east. Its county seat stands in Taohuayuan Subdistrict, named for the fable. The 2020 census counted 607,338 residents, 83.54 per cent of them Tujia and 8.93 per cent Miao, and the county is nicknamed the cradle of the Tujia people. The Baishou dance, added to the national intangible heritage list in 2008, is danced here in its big and small forms. Its mountains hold the Peach Blossom Spring scenic area, the old river towns of Gongtan and Longtan, and a cool wet climate with 1,332 millimetres of rain.
