Yunyang County lies in the heart of the Three Gorges reservoir area on the upper Yangtze, between Fengjie and Wanzhou. Qin set up Juren County here in 314 BC; the seat moved to Tangkou in 568 and the county became Yun'an, then a prefecture in 1283 and a county again in 1373. On 28 September 1999 the seat left the old town for Shuangjiang on the north bank, the furthest full relocation of a county seat in the reservoir, with more than 170,000 people moved. The county has 920,000 residents, and in its south-east corner the limestone basin of Longgang.
