Chongqing University was founded in 1929 by the Sichuan military governor Liu Xiang, with money raised in part as a levy on pork. Its first term opened on 12 October 1929 at Caiyuanba, and Shapingba was chosen as its permanent site the same day. The science building was finished in 1933 and the university moved to the Jialing bank, near Shimen Bridge. From 1937 it ran a joint arrangement with the National Central University, evacuated from Nanjing and given 200 mu of hillside land to build on. Professors including Ma Yinchu, Li Siguang and Wu Guanzhong taught at both. In December 1942 it became a national university.
