Nanchuan is the district south of the Chongqing urban area, on the road to Guizhou, named for the source of the South River. A county was set up here in 637; it became a county-level city in 1994 and a district on 22 October 2006. It holds 572,000 people, 60.97 per cent of them urban. The district's name in the wider world belongs to one mountain: Jinfo, whose scenic area covers 1,300 square kilometres and whose karst table mountain is a World Heritage extension. Shanwangping, at 1,300 metres, is China's first national-level karst ecological park, and the district's square bamboo shoots are a geographical indication product.
