The arhat hall behind the shops
A Song temple on Minzu Road that has been burned, smashed and rebuilt, and keeps its cliff of Buddhas through all of it.
Luohan Temple stands on Minzu Road, the seat of the Chongqing Buddhist Association and a national key Buddhist temple in the Han Chinese area. It was founded in the Northern Song Zhiping years, between 1064 and 1067, because of a cave of arhats, and was first called Zhiping Temple. In 1885 the abbot Longfa rebuilt the arhat hall on the model of Baoguang Temple at Xindu and added 500 clay arhats, and the temple took the name it has now. Its cliff carries more than 400 Buddha figures over a length of 20 metres, cut in the Song dynasty and close in style to Dazu. The arhat hall holds 524 figures.
