Jinfo: the bamboo sea and the golden Buddhas
The karst table mountain above Nanchuan, its bamboo and ginkgo, and the evening light that gave it a temple's name.
Jinfo is the mountain at the southern edge of Nanchuan, the highest peak of the Dalou range, a syncline of Permian limestone with cliffs up to 300 metres around a flat top. Its main peak, Fengchuiling, reaches 2,251 metres and keeps snow for four months; the top records 8.2 degrees and 1,434.5 millimetres of rain. The mountain is one of the great plant places of the region, with 4,768 seed plants, wild ginkgo and Francois' langur, and in 2014 it was added to the South China Karst World Heritage site. Its name is an effect of light: at the end of a clear summer or autumn day the cliffs turn the colour of gilded Buddhas.
