Tongnan: the gilded Buddha in the cliff hall
An 18.43-metre gilt seated image inside a Song and Yuan temple at the foot of Dingming mountain, with three halls and a carved cliff around it.
The Great Buddha Temple stands at the foot of Dingming mountain in Tongnan, and the cliff carvings around it are dated to the Song. Inside the hall a gilded seated image rises 18.43 metres, one of the largest indoor golden Buddhas in the world. Around it stand the Great Buddha Hall, the Guanyin Hall and the Jade Emperor Hall, holding Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian figures together. The temple is described as Song and Yuan work with a thousand years behind it, and it took its present name when a colossal Buddha was carved into the hills.
