The Daning: a tributary that comes down from Shaanxi
The largest tributary in the Three Gorges basin begins in the Zhongnan Mountains and ends at Wushan, with a salt town and cliff coffins on the way.
Wuxi County sits at the upper reaches of the Daning River on the southern slopes of the central Daba Mountains, bordering Shaanxi to the north and Hubei to the east. The Daning crosses it first: the river rises in the Zhongnan Mountains in Shaanxi and runs south through Wuxi and Wushan to the Yangtze. The county is 685 kilometres by road from downtown Chongqing, covers 4,030 square kilometres and has 540,000 people, and Yintiao Ridge reaches 2,797 metres. Its old trades are still legible: Ningchang was a salt town, the Jingzhuba cliffs hold a national-key coffin group, and Hongchiba is a forest park on the cold plateau.
