Chiyou and the hall of the Nine Li at Pengshui
A new ceremonial complex for a defeated god, and the old argument about who the Miao and the Tujia descend from.
Pengshui lies on the lower Wu River, 270 kilometres from the Chongqing urban centre, in country the county's own geographers describe as two mountains holding one trough. Karst is strongly developed, the ridges are high and the gorges deep; the seat stands at 245 metres and three named peaks rise above a thousand. Forest covers 54.2 per cent of the county. The county was organised in 593, took its name from the Peng, an old name for the Yu River, and became a Miao and Tujia autonomous county in 1983. Of its people, 59.5 per cent belong to eleven minorities, among them 270,000 Miao and 90,000 Tujia, and the average year is 17.6 degrees.
