Chiyou and the hall of the Nine Li at Pengshui
A new ceremonial complex for a defeated god, and the old argument about who the Miao and the Tujia descend from.
Jiulicheng is the Chiyou complex on the edge of Pengshui, a walled ceremonial ground built to give the county's minority majority a monumental ancestor. Its name takes the Nine Li, the tribe of the war god Chiyou, and its halls present him not as the defeated enemy of the Yellow Emperor but as a founder. The county around it is 43.41 per cent Miao and 9.97 per cent Tujia, with 270,000 Miao and 90,000 Tujia counted in 2010, and its seat stands at 245 metres on the Wu River. The complex is new building on an old argument, and it is best read as a statement about who was here first.
