Guild halls and one gate: the fabric of Anju
Anju's county history ended in 1662 and its offices closed in 1903; what remains is a street of halls built by merchants from elsewhere.
Anju is the oldest town in Tongliang, established in 588 as Chishui County and finally incorporated into Tongliang County. In 1481 a separate Anju County was set up from Tongliang and Suining land and named after the Anju stream; it was abolished in 1662, restored with Tongliang in 1721, and the town kept county offices such as the instructor, the inspector and the garrison office until 1903. The historic building group at the old county seat is protected at municipal level, and the town is a 4A tourist attraction. Its guild halls and temples are its record: the Jiangxi hall of 1738, the Qiyang and Huangzhou halls, a Mazu temple of 1481.
