Tongnan stands at the north-western corner of Chongqing and is named for the fact that it lay south of Tongchuan prefecture. It covers 1,594 square kilometres and counted 950,000 inhabitants in 2009. The Fu and the Qiong are its two rivers, and the district governs two subdistricts and twenty towns, among them Zitong, where the Great Buddha Temple sits back from the Fu, and Shuangjiang, where Qing houses line the south bank. The plain here is quiet agricultural country. The district's name in wider travel is one gilded seated image, cut into a hill and covered in gold.
