The Daba: a range that divides two rivers
A thousand kilometres of folded rock along Chongqing's northern border, and the watershed it carries.
The Daba Mountains run along Chongqing's northern border and divide the Yellow River basin from the Yangtze basin. The range cuts through Sichuan, Chongqing, Shaanxi and Hubei and spans about 1,000 kilometres, belonging to the same orogenic belt as the Qinling; the narrow Daba is about 1,300 to 2,000 metres high, and its highest ground lies in the Shennongjia massif in Hubei. The Chongqing end of the range is Chengkou, where the county covers most of the Daba inside the municipality. Its southern slope drains into the Sichuan Basin or straight into the Yangtze by short streams, and the Daba nature reserve in Chongqing is one of the country's national nature reserves.
