Huangshui: the cold forest in the Shizhu hills
The forest park on Shizhu's high ground, the crops that need cold shade, and the plateau Tujia who farm them.
Huangshui is the forest country of Shizhu, a town and a national forest park on the high ground above the Yangtze, in the heart of the Three Gorges reservoir region. This is the cold end of the county: the country of the plateau Tujia, who grow buckwheat and herd sheep above a thousand metres, and whose life has always been the hardest of the three Tujia ways of living. Shizhu is known as the home of Coptis chinensis, a plant of shade, cold and constant damp, and its water shield ponds came to 14,000 mu by 2020. The forest is the crop's habitat as much as a place to walk.
