Hong'an and the town behind Border Town
The river town at the three-province corner that Xiushan calls the model for Shen Congwen's novella, and the novel itself.
Biancheng is the river town at the corner where Chongqing, Hunan and Guizhou meet, 47 kilometres from the Xiushan county seat. The place is Hong'an, and it is a real town with a real ferry landing, a street behind it, and the Pavilion Where the Rooster Crows in Three Provinces on the point of land where the three provinces touch. It is also a literary claim. Shen Congwen's Border Town, serialised in 1934, is set in Chadong on the Hunan bank, and Xiushan says Hong'an is the model for it. Both statements can be true at once, which is the interesting part.
