A point at the confluence that has been a Han city, a Ming salt office, a Qing hall and now a financial district.

The first city on the point

In the Eastern Han a new city called Beifu was built at Jiangbeizui, and the governor of Ba commandery worked from it for a time. In the Ming a tea and salt inspection office stood on the point, where tea and salt were inspected before sale. In 1754 the Jiangbei hall was set up with its seat at Jiangbeizui, and in 1759 the hall was enlarged by taking 42 market towns from Ba county, the arrangement known as the separate administration of Jiangbei and Ba. The point has been an office and a crossing for longer than it has been a skyline.

The tomb of Ming Yuzhen

Ming Yuzhen, a rebel commander, took Sichuan at the end of the Yuan, declared himself emperor in 1362 and made Chongqing his capital under the name Daxia and the reign name Tiantong. His tomb, the Ruiling, stands near Jiangbeizui and is one of the sites listed on the point, beside the Jiangbeizui site and St Teresa's Church. The tomb and the offices are the reason the point matters in the older record: it was a seat of government before it was a place of business, and the grave of a Ming emperor lies among the new buildings.

The district built after 2010

The central business district was basically complete by 2018 and is the only national-level strategic financial centre in central and western China, built to draw financial firms. The city has backed it as Chongqing's future financial centre, and many financial firms have moved in. It faces Jiefangbei across the water and holds the Chongqing Grand Theatre, the Science and Technology Museum and the central park. Jiangbeicheng station joins Lines 6 and 9. In November 2025 Jiangbei district, which contained the point, was abolished and its ground, with most of Yubei and parts of Beibei, became the new Liangjiang New Area.
