Three minutes above the Yangtze
The 1987 cable car was built for commuters and is now a monument to a city that crossed its rivers on cables.
The Yangtze cableway runs from 151 Xinhua Road in Yuzhong to 4 Shangxinjie in Nan'an. Construction began on 15 March 1986 and it opened on 24 October 1987, 1,166 metres long, with the north station at 267 metres, the south station at 225 metres and the lowest point of the cable 215 metres above the water. Each cabin carries 81 people including the driver at a top speed of 10 metres per second, and the crossing takes three minutes; the daily capacity is 30,000. Four load-bearing cables were imported from West Germany and the rest was made in China. It became a municipal protected building in 2009 and a 4A scenic area in 2018.
