Black Stone Gorge, and the rock that names it
Southern Qijiang is limestone, dolomite and coal; the gorge is the district's geology seen from inside.
Heishixia, Black Stone Gorge, belongs to the limestone country of southern Qijiang, in the hills that run down to the Guizhou border. The district around it is mineral ground: limestone and dolomite, pyrite, and coal seams proven at 2 billion tonnes, in a district of 2,747.8 square kilometres and 1.22 million people. Qijiang was formed in 2011 from Qijiang County and Wansheng District, and its southern side meets Guizhou. The gorge is a place of stone and water rather than of monuments. What the district records about itself is its rock, its seams and its fossil tracks; the gorge is read from the ground it cuts through.
