Dianjiang: the peony, flower and root
A county that opens its peony season with a stadium concert and sells the root bark of the same plant as danpi.
Dianjiang calls itself the place of origin of the national-flower peony, and each year, when the peonies open, a concert is held in the Dianjiang stadium to open the peony culture festival. The flower is only half the crop. Peony root bark, danpi, is one of the county's listed local products, sold alongside stone-milled douhua, rice wine, yellow-sand pomelo and pickled melon, and the county's crafts include a local carving, palm-bamboo walking sticks and horn pipes. The county lies in the middle of Chongqing, east of the Huaying range, 1,518 square kilometres of land running from 320 to 1,183 metres, with an annual mean temperature of 17.0 degrees and 1,183.1 millimetres of rain.
