The college above the bank

Huangjueping is a subdistrict of Jiulongpo District, which lies roughly between the Yangtze River and the Zhongliang Mountains. It has eight neighbourhoods, among them Huangzheng Street, Tangjiawan, Xiaowan and Wulongmiao. The landmark above them is the Huangjueping campus of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, which has two sites, this one and the newer Huxi campus finished in 2005. The institute began in 1950, when part of the art faculty of the army's Northwest Military and Political University came south with the troops and opened the Southwest People's Art Institute here. It merged with the Chengdu Art College in 1953 and took its present name in 1959.

Studios below the campus

Below the campus the city's own account describes Huangjueping as its creative art cluster: a large number of studios, art shops and training institutes, an art market in the 501 complex, and the graffiti street on the river bank. The institute supplies most of the teachers and a great many of the students. Its best known graduates include the oil painter Luo Zhongli, whose Father became an emblem of Chinese painting in the 1980s, and the painters Zhang Xiaogang and He Duoling. The city account places the market, the training institutes and the street in this one subdistrict, with the campus standing above them.
