Tea carried across the strait
Tea plants brought across the strait in the 1850s are part of Dong Ding oolong’s story. Roasting gives the tea its distinctive character.
Dong Ding is a ridge in Lugu Township, southern Nantou, rising between 600 and 1,200 metres. The tea grown there is the reference point for Taiwan's roasted oolong: tightly rolled leaves, a slow charcoal roast and a nutty, mineral finish. Lugu is a small township of tea gardens, bamboo and forest, and the road up to Dong Ding passes drying yards and family workshops.
