The tea street by the river
Dadaocheng turned a riverbank into Taipei's tea and cloth market in the 1860s. Dihua Street still sells the goods, and the City God still watches over its lanes.
Dadaocheng lies along the Tamsui River in Taipei's Datong District. From the 1850s it grew as a trading settlement, and after the treaty port of Tamsui opened in 1860 it became the city's tea and cloth market. Dihua Street is still lined with long shop-houses selling dried goods, medicine and tea, with the Xia-Hai City God Temple in the middle.
