The port that lost the sea
Lukang was Taiwan’s second-largest city in 1800. Its harbour silted up, and its old lanes remain.
Lukang is a township on the Changhua coast. Its old harbour once handled rice, cloth and other goods. The harbour gradually silted up in the nineteenth century, and the later main railway passed elsewhere. Today the compact lanes, temples and craft workshops retain the form of the former port town.
