Jiufen

Jiufen sits on a steep slope in Ruifang District, New Taipei, about an hour from Taipei. It grew after gold was found in the hills in the 1890s and declined when the mines closed. Its narrow Old Street, built along the slope with covered steps and teahouses, became a film location and then a tourist destination; about 1,600 people still live in the settlement.
