Steam in the valley
Beitou's sulfur springs made it a Japanese-era resort. The 1913 public bath is a museum, and the valley still smells of hot stone.
Beitou is Taipei's northernmost district, on the slopes of the Datun volcano group. Steam rises from the Thermal Valley and the Beitou River, and the name comes from a Ketagalan word for a witch. Japanese-era bathhouses turned the valley into a resort; the 1913 public bath now houses the Beitou Hot Spring Museum, and small hotels still pipe the sulfur water into their rooms.
