Umbrellas, tobacco and a Hakka basin
Meinong is a Hakka district in the hills above Kaohsiung, known for oil-paper umbrellas, tobacco barns and the writer Chung Li-ho.
Meinong lies in the hills northeast of Kaohsiung, in a basin of rivers and low mountains. It is one of the four districts that form the centre of Hakka culture in the city, along with Jiasian, Shanlin and Liouguei. The district is known for tobacco farming, for oil-paper umbrellas made by hand, and for the writer Chung Li-ho, who was born in Gaoshu, Pingtung, and later lived in Meinong. Its old street, East Gate Tower and lake are the focus of a slow half-day visit.
