Beinan

The Beinan site lies on a terrace above the Beinan River in Taitung City. It was discovered in 1980, when construction of the railway station uncovered a graveyard of slate coffins. Excavation found more than 1,600 burials and around 20,000 objects of jade, pottery and stone, making it the largest and most complete prehistoric settlement found in Taiwan. The site is now a park, with an outdoor display of standing stones and a museum of prehistory nearby. The site and Mount Dulan are included together on Taiwan’s list of potential World Heritage sites.
