A fort, an academy and a school of thought
Chihkan Tower stands on a Dutch fort, and the Confucian temple nearby was Taiwan's first academy. Together they mark the centre of the old prefecture.
Chihkan Tower stands on the site of Fort Provintia, built by the Dutch in 1653 at a place the Siraya called Sakam. The fort surrendered to Koxinga in 1662 and was later ruined by rebellion and earthquakes; the buildings on the site today date largely from the Qing reconstruction. A few minutes away is the Tainan Confucian Temple, founded in 1665 and known as the First Academy of Taiwan. The surrounding blocks are the heart of the old prefectural city.
