The city that was drawn before it was built
Taichung's old core still follows a Japanese plan of straight streets, canals and covered markets. The grid is the history.
Central Taichung was rebuilt after 1900 on a grid of broad streets, with canals, parks and public buildings. The old core still follows that plan: the Second Market, a covered brick market from the Japanese period; the Liuchuan canal, once a drain and now a walking corridor; Taichung Park with its lake and pavilion; and the streets radiating from the old station. The scale is low, the shade is generous, and much of the district is still a working market.
