The fort at the edge of the map
The Dutch built a headquarters on a sandbar at Anping. The sea has since retreated, leaving a fort, a tree house and a street of food stalls.
Anping is the coastal district where Taiwan's written history begins for many visitors. The Dutch East India Company moved its headquarters here in 1624 and built Fort Zeelandia on a sandy spit called Tayouan. After Koxinga's siege, the fort passed to the Zheng regime, then to the Qing. Silting joined the spit to the mainland, and the harbour moved. The district now holds the fort, the tree house, old streets and a fishing port.
