The flat that the tide keeps remaking
Gaomei is a tidal wetland built from river silt and sorted daily by the sea. A boardwalk now carries visitors over the mud.
Gaomei Wetlands lie in Qingshui District on Taichung's coast, where the Dajia River meets the Taiwan Strait. The flat is made of fine sediment carried down by the river and sorted by tides, and it supports crabs, mudskippers and large numbers of migratory birds. A 691-metre boardwalk was built in 2014 to keep visitors off the most fragile ground. The rows of wind turbines behind the mudflat have become part of the view.
