The port that lost the sea
Lukang was Taiwan’s second-largest city in 1800. Its harbour silted up, and its old lanes remain.
Changhua lies on the western plain, between the Dadu River to the north and the Zhuoshui River to the south. The county is flat, agricultural and densely settled, with Changhua City at its centre. Its best-known town is Lukang, a harbour that flourished in the eighteenth century, silted up in the nineteenth, and then preserved the streets that other cities demolished.
